Vintage Style Re-colorization

Hi there!
I was bored this evening so I decided to try a hand at colorizing a black and white photo in Photoshop. I found this really great tutorial while surfing the web and I just had to give it a try!! Interested? Try it out for yourself! Don’t have Photoshop? Download a free trial!

The technique is generally used on a photo that’s already black and white, so I had to take my original color photo and make it black and white before re-colorizing it. Seems counter productive I know, but it’s totally necessary! See for yourself…

I’m not 100% pleased with how the hair turned out, but for my first ever attempt I’m stoked!! Plus it’s A LOT of fun if you’re into nerdy Photoshop things such as I. The part of the tutorial about making the background things pink first to add a gaussian blur was totally confusing and not necessary. Not for me anyways, so I skipped those parts. All I did was use the polygon lasso tool to select what I wanted to color, then went to the layers, and then tweaked the curves as instructed by the tutorial. That all looks like this…

It seems complicated, and I suppose it would be a bit for those unfamiliar with photoshop, but it’s not too hard to figure out. I think the results are totally worth messing around with the program until you get it right! It’s so fun!

Plus, after all is said and done, you can hang out with Godzilla. No big deal.

Yep. Nerd.

Have a splendid weekend :)

I’ve heard of Gimp but I’m not familiar with it. You could give it a try and see!

Nerdy goodness indeed. i keep telling myself I need to learn how to use this tool! Sometimes I feel a tad like the last kid picked for the team because I have no clue and it appears that everyone else know’s how… haha. Thanks for the link – I’ll have to give it a whirl :)

It is a little intimidating at first if you’ve never used photoshop. You really just need to click on every single thing you can and figure out what it does… and then try to remember what it did you can use it again when you need to haha! It’s really fun though when you get the hang of it :)
