Fall For Cotton – a vintage sew along for cotton lovers

Tasha and I have been mulling over this idea for a while now and are excited to finally announce our newest sewing collaboration: Fall For Cotton! In short, this is a sew along for those who, like us, love sewing vintage styles and think cotton fabric is amazing. This is not a sewing competition. This is a fun way to challenge yourself by limiting your fabric choices, sewing a vintage style, meeting a deadline, and making new friends! Intrigued? Great! Here’s what you need to know…

FallForCotton

Any vintage decade is fair game (and by vintage we mean 1920′s through 70′s!) but you’re only allowed to use fabric that is 100% cotton. You heard right! It must be 100% cotton.

Quilting cottons would be an obviously acceptable choice, but flannel, twill, corduroy, voile, broadcloth, sateen, and chambray (to name a few) are also allowed. Get it? If it’s cotton, it’s all good!

This sewalong will work much like Sew For Victory did. You can pick your own pattern and work at your own pace. You can use a true vintage pattern, a reproduction pattern, or any modern pattern that helps you recreate your vintage look. We’re officially kicking off today, giving you about two weeks to gather your supplies, so we can start sewing on the 1st of September. It doesn’t matter when you actually start sewing, as long as you have your finished project photographed and uploaded to the Fall For Cotton Flickr Pool by the end of Monday September 30th.

We encourage everyone to join us on Flickr and upload photos of your inspirations and your progress, and get involved in the discussions along the way. Use the hashtag #fallforcotton on twitter and instagram to check in with your fellow sewalongers and show off what you’re making!

Tasha and I will be posting some inspiration and helpful hints once we get started in September, so be sure to follow along on our blogs. Are you excited?! We certainly are!

So here’s the low down:
-Join the Flickr group Fall For Cotton and introduce yourself in the discussion
-Pick a pattern that helps you recreate a garment from your favorite vintage decade: 1920′s through 70′s
-Pick any fabric that’s 100% cotton
-Start gathering supplies now, with a plan to start sewing on September 1st
-Have your finished garment photographed and uploaded to Flickr by the end of Monday September 30th
-One finished project = one chance to win some awesome prizes at the end of the sewalong!

Now grab a button and spread the word!

Fall For Cotton Button – 300 px wide SFVlogo250

Fall For Cotton Button – 200 px wide SFVlogo180

Code for 200px button, copy and paste this in your sidebar.

Again, this is not a sewing competition. This is a fun way to challenge yourself by limiting your fabric choices, sewing a vintage style, meeting a deadline, and making new friends!

Let’s do this :)

hey is anyone else having trouble with the buttons? I don’t seem to be able to get it to work. After I paste in the HTML, my blog just displays that little image of a picture that won’t load. :(

    • Rochelle October 3, 2013 at 4:59 pm #

You’re right, something’s up! Thanks for letting me know. I’m not sure what changed since they worked earlier, but I’m looking into it right now…

    • Rochelle New October 4, 2013 at 9:47 am #

The buttons should be fixed now :)

  2. Lyric September 13, 2013 at 2:39 pm #

Too late for me to join but I so want to be in on the next one. Is this blog where it would be posted (IF) you are planning on holding one.

I eagerly await your reply. I’d like to prepare to participate. Sounds like sew much fun.

      Hi Lyric,
The deadline for Fall For Cotton is coming up quickly, but it is a work at your own pace sew along. If you feel that you could sew something before the 30th then we would be more than happy to have you join us! If not, please feel free to join the flickr group anyway and get a feel for what we’re all about so you’re prepared for next time. I will most likely be making Fall For Cotton an annual event because there’s been a great response so far, but next up will be the 2nd annual Sew For Victory sewing challenge (which is 1940′s themed and a lot of fun!). I will always announce new sew alongs here on my blog, or in my newsletter in advance. Thanks for stopping by to say hello, and I hope we can sew along together in the near future :)

Just got emailed that the fabric I ordered from fabric.com is out of stock – this ALWAYS happens to me – ughh! Lol – thinking about using the other fabric I purchased instead: https://www.fabric.com/buy/210403/amy-butler-alchemy-queen-anns-butterflies-ruby or maybe going shopping at Joann’s??? Also my local go-to mega store :)

  10. joellestlaurent August 20, 2013 at 3:37 am #

fun! i’m in! i love how flexible of a challenge this is, so i can fit it in my existing fall sewing plans. and who doesn;t love cotton?

  11. sewexhausted August 20, 2013 at 12:37 am #

I am in! Today I received 8 new (new to me) vintage patterns in the mail and I already know which one I want to use! Perfect timing for this and I am excited to get started! ~Laurie

  12. misscrayolacreepy August 19, 2013 at 5:55 pm #

I’m in, I’m in! I’m going to finally cut into some quilting cotton I have been hoarding :)

  13. Mags August 19, 2013 at 3:32 pm #

Just ordered a 30s pattern from USA (I’m in England) just right for some deco style cotton fabric in my stash. Can’t wait.

  14. angela August 19, 2013 at 8:52 am #

Sounds like fun and I need some motivation to get started with my fall sewing. I need some new dresses that fit and a gorgeous vintatge cotton dress dress would be a perfect start ;)

  15. Claire (iwanttobeaturtle) August 18, 2013 at 3:44 pm #

Ooh, count me in! This fits perfectly with my next couple of projects and will help motivate me back into sewing after a couple of weeks on holiday.

  16. Rose August 18, 2013 at 1:34 pm #

I don’t know where to start!! I thrift all my fabrics, so sometimes I have a hard time figuring out what a fabric is. (I was super jealous of that cotton sateen.) I think I want some long sleeved shirts for the winter that are warm and cuddly. Now to hunt through vintage patterns at Scrap!

  17. Gjeometry August 18, 2013 at 1:16 am #

Oh, this looks like such fun! I’m a big cotton fabric lover as well. Some people scoff at this, but I mean, cotton!!!! It’s great! And, I’ve been really wanting to finally sew up the vintage patterns I have got from the local thrift shop. So, I’m in!!

  18. Loran August 17, 2013 at 6:29 pm #

Awesomesauce! I just picked up a piece of vintage cotton on my travels. Now it won’t have to languish in my stack o’ stuff “To Do” someday. Choices…choices…

  19. sewcookgardenrepeat August 17, 2013 at 4:17 pm #

Hmmm, this may just coincide with my already made sewing plans!

  20. Sewing princess August 17, 2013 at 4:07 pm #

Cool! I have some real vintage cotton I can use!

  21. Jessica Cangiano August 17, 2013 at 10:46 am #

So splendidly cool! Awesome idea, ladies, I bet this is going to garner a ton of participation (who doesn’t love wearing cozy, classic cotton?).

    ♥ Jessica

  22. tanya maile August 17, 2013 at 9:01 am #

Yay! Perfect opportunity to use some gingham!

  23. johanna@projects by me August 17, 2013 at 5:26 am #

This sounds like fun and cotton is my favourite! I hope I’ll have time to join in.

  24. sullivan1970 August 16, 2013 at 10:54 pm #

  29. andreahg August 16, 2013 at 1:05 pm #

Count me in! I just ordered some corduroy and denim yesterday.

  30. Kathy August 16, 2013 at 12:01 pm #

Woo hoo! I’m super excited for this sew along! I love that we’re not restricted with a pattern! Now, I just have to find the perfect vintage pattern!

  31. Anthea August 16, 2013 at 9:23 am #

I would love to sewalong. Is it a problem I already worked on the pattern? It’s self drafted and I already made a muslin to test the fit, haven’t worked on the real thing yet. I’m planning on using a 100 % cotton fabric and cotton lining, so it would be perfect for the sewalong.

  32. Ashley August 16, 2013 at 9:07 am #

Woohoo! I actually just cut out a project that fits this perfectly :)

  33. agirlinwinter August 16, 2013 at 9:00 am #

Yay! So exciting! I know what I’m going to make already :-)
